The Flat Bottle Company was founded in Broome, Western Australia in 1992 to recycle just a small portion of the wine bottles going to the local tip. Since then, the business has grown steadily from a backyard operation into an award-winning international business. In 2001 we were invited by the Victorian Government to base our operations in Melbourne to more easily access export markets (and so we could get enough recycled bottles!).
It is important to us to remain Australian made and to do this our prices must be very competitive compared with imported products. Consumers are asking for, and purchasing Australian made items and our presence in the marketplace is growing with a reputation of originality and service. This is reflected in Telstra Small Business Awards and Environment Awards.

The Flat Bottle Company has received a number of awards over the years in environmental and small business categories. They are:
- Disability Access Award, 2004, Moreland City Council
- State Finalist in the 2001 Telstra Small Business Awards
- National Finalist in the 2000 Prime Ministers Environment Awards.
- Winner in the 1999 Kimberley Business Enterprise Awards in the Building, Manufacturing and Primary Industry Awards
- State Finalist in the 1999 Telstra WA Small Business Development Corporation Awards in the Micro Business Awards.
- Successful applicant in the Waste Reduction and Recycling Grant Program (Department of Environmental Protection ) for the design and purchase of new production equipment.
